But despite the rain and wind, there was a good number of people present, enjoying the giants steaming along the line. ]]> Thu Nov 5 2009 2009 - SEVERN VALLEY RAILWAY AUTUMN STEAM GALA http://lindasrailpix.fotopic.net/c1767488.html SEVERN VALLEY RAILWAY AUTUMN STEAM GALA 26.SEPTEMBER 2009 We were lucky to have a fine bright day on the Saturday of the Gala. We arrived early at Kidderminster, about 08.30 and the car park was already filling fast. After time spent looking round Kidderminster Station, we took a train all the way to Bridgnorth. Deciding to look at the front entrance of the station, we were amazed to see a footbridge across industrial buildings and a road to a cliff face. Then we remembered the tickets gave a free ride on the Cliff Railway. A walk along the road downwards for 15 minutes or so, passing a pleasant spot by the river and we came to the entrance to the Cliff Railway. We boarded a car to the top and took a walk past the castle ruins. A most interesting town it is too, well worth visiting from the railway. Taking a train to Highley we investigated The Engine House just a few steps from the station. This is a new museum housing a number of locos and other railway items. There are 2 very good observation platforms there, where you can watch the trains passing to and from Highley as you sit with a cup of tea. All in all it was a great day out. However, is this worthwhile to organise in the future, since the event was at 4pm, was at quite a height and not close to the station. Health and safety issues again? Surely a run along the track would be much better. Strange, since on the exact same day, after the Trooping of the Colour in London, an impressive display of aircraft flew over thousands of people along The Mall and right over Buckingham Palace, where the Queen and guests were standing on the balcony. Arriving too early for the free car park at High Rocks, which was locked till after 10am, 65 Southern passed the remains of the old halt, on it's way to Groombridge. Just after 10 it returned past the same spot back to Tunbridge Wells via High Rocks. No 65 approaching High Rocks... ..and pulling into the platform. As we arrived at Tunbridge Wells West behind 65, 47493 Jinty was steaming in the yard. 65 detached from the train and reversed up the track. After 65 joined up with 47493 in the yard, they exchanged the token and double headed the next train 7715 GWR pulling a brake van into the yard. Ready and waiting Fonmon 1636 joins up with 7715. 7715 and Fonmon are ready for duty. Waiting for action. 47493 exchanging token as it pulled into Tunbridge Wells. Fonmon, 7715 and brake van about to go on the front of the 12.00 train. The train returned at 12.50 pulled by 65 and 7715. 7715 remains with the train after 65 detatched. Waiting to move off from the coaches. 65 running into the yard. 7715 reversing past the train... ..and into the yard for water. 7715 & 47493 join up in the yard. Fonmon approaching Tunbridge Wells with a goods train. The brake van experience at the back of the goods. 47493 & 7715 about to attach on the train. Concentration as they inch forward to the front coach. Groombridge Station being entertained by Morris Men. 65 pulling the goods train into Groombridge... ..and the brake van enthusiasts get off. The goods heading off down the track. Note the points being moved manually and the new signal box under construction. Then 47493 pulls the coaches into the station running as a 'Birthday Special'. Departing for High Rocks. The next arrival at 16.25 was double headed by 7715 & 65. Followed by 47493 with the goods train... ..and another load of passengers in the brake van. Time for a short rest. 65 waiting at Groombridge for a 17.03 departure.

]]> Tue May 19 2009 2009 - KENT & EAST SUSSEX RAILWAY - 'THE LAST TRAIN'S GONE' GALA http://lindasrailpix.fotopic.net/c1696407.html 'THE LAST TRAIN'S GONE' GALA KENT & EAST SUSSEX RAILWAY 02.MAY 2009 65 South East & Chatham Railway O1 Class A regular on the line in the early 1950's visiting from the Bluebell Railway and back to K&ESR for the first time in 54 years! 32678 BR A1X Class 'Terrier' Like 65 above, 32678 hauled the last passenger train in 1954. When 32678 left BR it spent some time at Butlins Holiday Park in Minehead as a 'novelty climbing frame' and had a series of owners before returning to K&ESR in the late 1980's. 3 'Terrier' named 'Bodiam' Purchased from LB&SCR in 1900 for £600, it was the K&ESR's original 'Terrier'. 662 'Martello' Visiting from Bressingham Steam Museum but failed and did not appear in steam on Saturday. It's place was taken by 23 'Holman F Stephens' 753 P Class Worked on branchline duties for SE&CR and Southern Railway before being hired by K&ESR in 1936. A major restoration was completed in the mid 1980's. 65 'Maunsell' USA Class Built in America in 1943 came over as part of the war effort, then used as a shunter at Southampton Docks and on to Ashford working in sidings at the wagon works. 1638 16XX Class A pannier tank built in 1951 for BR to a Great Western design in the famous GWR works at Swindon. Worked in South Wales on sharp curves and steep gradients similar to K&ESR. D6570 Class 33 Built for BR in 1961 and named 'Ashford' in 1980. Monday 11 May 2009: 'THE LAST TRAIN'S GONE' GALA KENT & EAST SUSSEX RAILWAY 02.MAY 2009 65 South East & Chatham Railway O1 Class A regular on the line in the early 1950's visiting from the Bluebell Railway and back to K&ESR for the first time in 54 years! 32678 BR A1X Class 'Terrier' Like 65 above, 32678 hauled the last passenger train in 1954. When 32678 left BR it spent some time at Butlins Holiday Park in Minehead as a 'novelty climbing frame' and had a series of owners before returning to K&ESR in the late 1980's. 3 'Terrier' named 'Bodiam' Purchased from LB&SCR in 1900 for _600, it was the K&ESR's original 'Terrier'. 662 'Martello' Visiting from Bressingham Steam Museum but failed and did not appear in steam on Saturday. It's place was taken by 23 'Holman F Stephens' 753 P Class Worked on branchline duties for SE&CR and Southern Railway before being hired by K&ESR in 1936. A major restoration was completed in the mid 1980's. 65 'Maunsell' USA Class Built in America in 1943 came over as part of the war effort, then used as a shunter at Southampton Docks and on to Ashford working in sidings at the wagon works. 1638 16XX Class A pannier tank built in 1951 for BR to a Great Western design in the famous GWR works at Swindon. Worked in South Wales on sharp curves and steep gradients similar to K&ESR. D6570 Class 33 Built for BR in 1961 and named 'Ashford' in 1980. A parade of 7 steam locos arriving at Tenterden Town Station at 9.30am The cavalcade included 65 SE&CR visiting from the Bluebell Railway 23 'Holman F Stephens' wearing a plate with 662 LBSC Martello, which it replaced as 662 had failed 65 SE&CR became a stage for the crews 3 'Bodiam' K&ESR 'Bodiam' in the capable hands of a lady :)) The cavalcade moved down into the yard where the locos were decoupled 65 'Maunsell' was the first to break away, run up to the level crossing and back down into the station As 23 runs down into the station, visiting 65 backs up to the level crossing 1638 running back before it joins the other locos in the station A second parade of 7 locos formed, the reverse order of the first Time for a break and breakfast A visitor welcomed aboard 65 SE&CR 753 hauled coaches into the station for the first departure at 10.30am 1638 GWR waiting at Bodiam Station 1638 departing Bodiam Or there was a free vintage bus (LUC213) running between the station and the castle 65 SE&CR departs Bodiam with the 'Vintage' coaches Bodiam Castle is about 10 minutes walk from the station The 'Vintage' train returning to Bodiam hauled by 32678 and 753 Here 1638 approaching Northiam with the 'Vintage' train Visiting 65 arriving at Northiam The 17.15 from Tenterden was pulled by diesel D6570 with 1930's coaches 32678 'Terrier' and 3 'Bodiam' pulling into Tenterden and handing over the token

GIFFORD STREET (LMR) ..in the 1960's near the end of steam. HOGLINGTON ..based on a seaside resort on the East Coast of Yorkshire.Terminus station as near the cliff edge as possible. RUNSWICK LEAMSIDE ..a fictional town in the NE of England 1987-1993. PRADEUX ..loosely based on Northern Burgundy area, maybe around Dijon from 1950's to present day. LLANFAIR ..Cambrian Railways from Machynlleth to Pwllheli around 1910-22 transporting slate from the mine. SMRZOVKA ..in north east Czech Republic up the branch line to Josefuv Dul. SMATORP ..a ficitonal town from the Halmstad Nassjo Railway main line at Oskarstrom. DEVILS CREEK ..a typical small town in the western state of Nevada USA in the late 1800's or early 1900's. The weather was extremely cold this year and many members had suffered from flu over the holiday, so they sensibly stayed in the clubhouse where it was nice and warm. The young members did brave the elements and enjoyed themselves on the track. The regular 2009 season started early this year in mid March, when we had some warm sunny weekends. Easter Sunday on 12.April was an OK day and Easter Monday became warm and sunny, which helped to make up for Good Friday and Saturday being cloudy and damp. Sunday 17.May was the day the Chelmsford Society of Model Engineers visited Beech Hurst. They arrived in the rain, but soon the sun came out. Unfortunately when 2pm came round and it was time for the public to ride, the clouds returned and by 3pm the rain too. Nevertheless the visitors enjoyed playing on the track giving rides to a few hardy members of the public. Thank you Chelmsford for your friendship and all your enthusiasm! Unlike last year with the warm sun, there was a very cold wind and members had to wrap up warm. On Sunday 6th April there was snow and although it was quiet on the railway, there were a few passengers. On Sunday 18th May the Chelmsford Club came to visit. This time the weather was kind to them and it was good to see them again with an interesting selection of locos. The weather in the summer of 2008 has not been kind, so it has been good to have some sunny days in September. On Saturday 20.September there was a visitor from Guildford, with loco 443. On Sunday 21.September 2 friends from Chelmsford brought 2 locos, 234 'Yorkshire' and 92220 'Evening Star', which worked hard pulling passengers round the circuit. Due to glorious weather on the weekends 11/12th October & 18/19th October, we were treated to the railway operating extra time at the end of the 2008 season. Visitor No1 Metropolitan had failed and a meeting was held beside it. 65 SECR was also busy... ..moving things in the yard. Someone was looking for a bucket. 21C123 'Blackmore Vale' being prepared. Through a window of a Pullman carriage. D3023 alongside the Pullman at Sheffield Park. 32473 at the back... ..and 'Eddystone' at the front of the Pullman... ..before it departed to Horsted Keynes. 1 Metropolitan moved to a more prominent position. D3023 pulling out a loco from the shed... ..and then there they were... ..65 592 & 263 all together. Time for 65 to get water & pull a set of Metropolitan Railway carriages replacing the sick No.1. 'Birch Grove' arriving back at Sheffield Park with it's own train. At Horsted Keynes the other visitor in steam.. 'Sir Berkeley' The Carriage Shed was open for viewing and work was well under way on this carriage. One compartment shows how it will look inside when finished. Plenty of space to work in the shed. Stationary engines were in steam on the goods dock. Vintage tractors etc on display in the picnic field. 34028 moved some goods wagons at Horsted Keynes. Bomb disposal unit with some odd personel aboard. Wartime movies in the waiting room. Military Police presence. 9017 arrives from Kingscote. The 1 o'clock concert begins on the platform... ..with all sorts of listeners. As the concert ends 1638 arrives... ..and stops on platforms 4 and 5... ..as 'Blackmore Vale' arrives from Sheffield Park. The 'Earl of Berkeley' waiting for a 2.04pm departure to Kingscote. GOODS TRAIN ONE This was made up of pregrouping wagons from the London Brighton and South Coast Railway and the South Eastern and Chatham Railway. This train was hauled by 55 'Stepney' and 672 'Fenchurch' GOODS TRAIN TWO This was made up of wagons from the Southern Railway and other companies such as the London Midland and Scottish Railway. Two new wagons made their debut at this event thanks to volunteers who have restored them at Horsted Keynes. Here is a collection of photos of locos and drivers working on the railway during the 2007 season. On 13.May there was a visit from the Chelmsford group and although there was a lot of rain, the sun did make an appearance later in the afternoon. Many thanks to the visitors for braving the elements and making the day a success. On Saturday 01.September there was a special day to mark the end of the school summer holidays. Three double header trains were running and people were offered multi-ride tickets for £2, which seemed popular. Sunday 14.October was the final running day of the 2007 season. The weather was sunny and warm with a good number of visitors. The younger members, Nick and Andrew, with a little help from Steve, were allowed to have fun on the pump trolley. What a great start for a Gala! I had a great day which had plenty of sun and loco movements. Alresford Station at the start of the day. 73906 waiting for 10.10 departure and W51400 on a push/pull service. 30585 - the other part of the push/pull service waiting for 11.00 departure. Final preparations aboard 73906. Aboard the 30585 cab. 662 all steamed up and ready. 73096 & 662 at Alresford from the picnic area. 662 receiving attention. 35005 Canadian Pacific passing through Ropley on a fast to Alresford. 5542 waiting at Ropley.. ..then departing to Alton. 34016 Bodmin steams in the yard. 30585 moving into a siding.. .. as the push/pull clears the mainline. 30585 with 35005 on platform 1.. ..and pulling away towards Alton. 41312 operating a local service to Alton. Ropley platform gets crowded as 5542 arrives. Terrier 662 arriving at Ropley. 73096 on a semi-fast Alresford to Alton service.. ..as Canadian Pacific passes through non-stop. W51400 was popular with visitors.. The arrival of 41312 on platform 2. 30585 pulling freight up the hill to Ropley. 35005 approaches Ropley from Alresford. 73096 on the 13.00 semi-fast from Alton. 30585 hauls the freight back to Alresford. At 14.09 662 on the push/pull returns to Ropley.. ..with a wait at the signal. 73096 semi-fast from Alresford. The timetable begins to slip as 41312 hauls the fast from Alton instead of 35005. On platform 2 is the push/pull with W51400.. ..662 and extra coaches. 32473 Birch Grove waits at Ropley.. ..as Canadian Pacific returns for water. Birch Grove then departs for Alton. 35005 is ready and heads out to Alresford. 34016 Bodmin gently steaming in the yard has young volunteer recruits looking after it. 5542 returns to Ropley.. ..coming to rest on platform 2. The push/pull arriving with an extra loco 662 on the front. Canadian Pacific back at Ropley with the semi-fast from Alresford stops for more water! Hello! Hello! 41312 & 5542 meet on platform 2. 5542 needs more coal so goes to the yard. 73096 approaching Ropley at 16.20 was the last train I saw before returning to Alresford and driving home. ..here in combination with 662.
